America Will Meet with Iran on Nuclear Weapon Program this Weekend!
President Bush has authorized the most significant American diplomat contact with Iran this weekend. Williams Burns, America’s third highest ranking diplomat is joining colleagues of other countries to meet with Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator in Switzerland. Contact with Iran has been very rare, and only on cases to discuss Iraq security and Iran harboring terrorists from Iraq. America and Iran have not had diplomatic relations since 1979 when there was a hostage crisis on the American Embassy right after Iran’s revolution.
Burns and the other countries will present a package of incentives to Iran. “The package of incentives was accompanied by a letter from U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the foreign ministers of the other five countries and sets out a scenario in which Iran would get a temporary reprieve from economic and financial sanctions in exchange for freezing its enrichment activities”(fox.news ).President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran said he will not discuss the nuclear weapon program, but only common topics. The President of Iran did say that he was interested in direct bilateral talks sometime in the future, even though he did not specify when or if there were definite plans.
We have had party talks with Iran, but President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will not discuss the nuclear weapon programs, only when the talks are bilateral directly with America. America, along with many other countries have tried to talk and negotiate with Iran over their nuclear weapons program. And Iran will not negotiate, but only threatens America “harm and pain” for bringing their country before the U.N. Security Council.
Check out this time table of negotiations I found from 2000 to 2006.
I think Iran is waiting to have those bilateral talks with America, because President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is waiting to talk to Obama. Obama does not see Iran as a threat and will go and talk directly with Iran without preconditions. Obama wants to offer more incentive packages and then if Iran does not stop their nuclear weapon program he will step up the economic pressure and America’s isolation. We have already been offering Iran incentives for years and years and now this weekend too, yet Iran never wants to stop their nuclear weapon program. Don’t forget Iran wants to wipe Israel off the map.
